“Ho passato quindici giorni a pensare a Dan e Tom ... pregando e riflettendo ... RIP Daniele, RIP Tom.

This is the news that no one ever wanted to read. Crushing. Incredibly sad… It took me a while to process it. Right now I feel very empty, with my heart rejecting brutality of truth.  I feel much love for you, Daniela, Claudio, Bruno ... Gone is Dan who always had everything under control, with a good judgment and right intuition in thin air.  He used to say: ”Just live the life you love. Mountain freedom!” In the past few days I tried to find a nice picture of him from our climbing days. This is the best I have with his eyes always wide open, reaching his goal, his dream, with an exclamation ‘Mountain freedom!’ I spent last fifteen days thinking of Dan and Tom... praying and reflecting... Today I just want to remember our time together with Dan remembering his big grin and a glint in his eye. Above all, he had a joy of life.  We lost a great human being and one of the most inspiring alpinists I have ever come across. It was an honour  for me to cross paths with him and to climb together in the Alps and on Nanga.  I have always felt fortunate to be able to share a perspective on life amidst those giant mountains… to learnt from him, to be inspired.  Danièle, you will be with me every time I bivouac in the mountains under the stars. I will feel the fresh air on my face and I will look at that bright star up there. I will see in it your wink. Thank you for our time together. My deepest condolences to your wife, family and friends. RIP Danièle, RIP Tom.
